Georgie Summers is the manager of Callahan’s, and he’s surprisingly friendly.

Charlotte told me he’s a really sweet guy, but even so, his warmth is shocking, especially after the nightmare interview I had with Adryan Booker.

We sit at a booth and have a chat, and Georgie asks me a bunch of questions about my schooling, my plans for the future, why I’m interested in getting a job at this establishment.

But it’s clear that this meeting is mostly a formality.

He’s already indicated that I’ll have a job, saying things like, “when you start” and other comments that put me at ease.

I need a job. Even if it’s just enough to pay rent and get me out of this financial hole I’ve dug since graduation.

“Look, we have our share of assholes that come through here,” Georgie says, chuckling, and Charlotte laughs with him.

“Some of them are here now, at the bar,” she mutters.

I laugh with them. It’s harmless. I can handle this.

“You just have to be pleasant but firm,” Georgie says, “and if anyone screws with you, tell me. I’ll handle it.”

“You’ll handle it?” A deep voice says from just behind us.

Georgie looks past me and his brow wrinkles. “Excuse me?”

I know that voice. I turn and see Adryan Booker standing just a foot or two away, wearing his trademark suit, but no tie, the top few buttons open on his dress shirt. He looks strong, he looks hot—and he looks seriously pissed off.

“You just told her that she should come to you and you’d handle it,” Adryan says. “And I was saying, what exactly do you think you’re going to handle?”

Charlotte clutches my leg and leans in, whispering in my ear. “Is that who I think it is?” she hisses.

I nod, but I can barely sit upright. I’m stunned.

I have no words for this moment, and I cannot make sense of it.

“This is a private conversation,” Georgie says. But there’s doubt in his eyes. He glances at me. “What’s going on, Luna? Is he with you?”

“I’m her employer,” Adryan says flatly. It’s like he’s almost physically grabbing me and holding me, claiming me as his.

My nipples instantly stiffen at his words.

“I thought you said you didn’t get the job,” Charlotte whispers, a little louder this time.

“I didn’t,” I tell her.

And then Adryan extends his hand and curves a finger my way. “Miss Tate, come with me. Now.”

I sit there for a moment, trying to think, trying to process what’s happening.

“Miss Tate,” he repeats, more firmly this time.

I look to Charlotte, who shrugs, wide-eyed.

Georgie sighs. “Just go,” he says. “You know you’re going to, so just do it now and spare us all the theatrics.”

“I’m so sorry,” I whisper, and Georgie rolls his eyes.

Charlotte grabs my hand. “Call me,” she says.

“I will. I’m sorry,” I repeat again.

“Good luck,” she mutters.

I leave the booth and approach Adryan Booker. His dark eyes hold me captive instantly. I still can’t believe he’s here, in Callahan’s. I can’t believe any of this is real.

“Follow me,” he says, and we exit the restaurant.
